New York Dialogues and Island Blethers

Readings from new works by Alison Flett and Martin Walsh

Wednesday 14 May 2008
7pm – 8.30pm

Tarts & Crafts, Balmedie [Venue 14]

Admission Free

Alison will be reading from About an Island, a novel which encompasses sixteen different narrative voices, all blissfully unaware of the tragedy that is about to envelope them. Martin will be relaying various dialogues overheard in New York including one between a Central Park squirrel and a migrating Mexican humming bird.

Alison Flett

Alison Flett was born and bred in Edinburgh but now lives in Orkney. She has performed her work on television and radio and at readings throughout the country and abroad. She recently won the Belmont prize for children's poetry and was shortlisted for the 2004 Scotsman/Orange short story award. Her collection of poetry Whit Lassyz Ur Inty (Argyll Press, 2004) was shortlisted for the Saltire First Book of the Year Award. Her story Here He Comes won the Hi-Arts short story competition, 2007. She has just completed her first novel.

Martin Walsh

Martin Walsh is a marine biologist turned short-story writer. His writing is often of a zoological bent and he doesn't always know who or what he is — he could be a flying frog from Borneo, a disgruntled cobra, a New York squirrel or even a human being. He has read on BBC Radio 4.
