North-East based theatre company Wordfringe
Festival Players packed out the Aberdeen Arts Centre in 2007 with
Confessions and Rants. This year they bring a new selection of quirky
compelling down-to-earth human dramas by North-East writers to a Deeside audience
at Woodend Barn.
The Director
|
|
Australian born Ian Spink started working in London as a choreographer in
1977, co-founding Second Stride (1982-1996) together with associate director Antony
McDonald. He initiated a move in the company's activities from dance theatre towards
devised experimental multi-disciplinary work. Ian's recent freelance activities
have included directing and choreographing with companies including: Scottish Opera,
Citizens Theatre, Opera North, Royal Shakespeare Company, Opera Zuid, Royal National
Theatre, Rambert Dance Company and Joint Stock. Currently he is Artistic Director
with Citymoves Dance Agency in Aberdeen.

The Writers
|
|
Cal Wallace writes short stories, monologues and other bits. He has represented
the Lemon Tree Writers at various
readings, including WordPlay (Shetland) and Word (University of Aberdeen). His one-act
play Uncle Kenny was performed by Wordfringe Festival Players at wordfringe
2007. His bestselling blockbuster is due to be written any year now.

Catriona Yule's one-act play Two Seconds was given a rehearsed reading
at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen in December 2003. Now she is bringing the full stage
version to Woodend Barn.
Kitten Heels, was also given a rehearsed reading at Aberdeen Arts Centre
in 2005, alongside Gráinne Smith's Vibrations.
She directed Uncle Kenny by Cal Wallace for Wordfringe Festival Players last
year.
|
|
Rapunzel Wizard spends most of his time being a performance poet, but he
has written and acted in two successful comic plays at the Brighton Fringe Festival,
and a poetry play Loads Of Dreads But No Fears at last year's wordfringe.
This year's serious monologue shows a different side of Rapunzel's work.
|
|
Haworth Hodgkinson is a poet, musician and short story writer, as well as
a playwright. His plays have been performed in Dundee, Inverurie and Aberdeen, amongst
them Callum McAllion's Voice, which was given an astonishing performance
by Pauline de Koning at last year's wordfringe. This year he is delighted
to be able to present Pauline with another challenging solo role.

The Performers
|
|
Morag Skene has lived and worked all her life in the North-East of Scotland.
She describes herself as a 'paddler' — paddling about in theatre, singing,
writing, producing and directing. This year however she is dipping her toe in the
stormy waters of straight theatre by performing with Wordfringe Festival Players.
She is delighted to be involved in this new venture but hopes she doesn't land up
drowning!
|
|
Suzy Enoch grew up in Aberdeen before moving to London to train as an actress
at Italia Conti. Her theatre credits include Coppelia in Coppelia, Angrianca
in the Italian tour of Happo and the Happiness and Jaxx in Buzz. She
is delighted to be back in Aberdeen and working with the Wordfringe Festival Players.
|
|
Actor and comedian Martin Bearne comes from Ellon, and has performed with
drama groups and youth theatre at various venues around Aberdeen and Edinburgh,
as well as in London at the National Theatre as part of the Shell Connections Competition.
He appeared with Wordfringe Festival Players in The Will o Janet Wishart
by Wendy Ivers at wordfringe 2007.
|
|
Pauline de Koning (Paulina Vanderbilt) is an accomplished actress who has
starred in many local productions, ranging from musicals to pantos, to one-act plays.
She has also written and directed a number of shows. Last year she appeared with
Wordfringe Festival Players and is proud to be asked again, as she is a great believer
in innovation on the stage.
