Portal Creative Writers launch an exciting anthology, introducing the extraordinary
writer Catherine Elmslie
Thursday 22 May 2008
St Katherine's Club, Shoe Lane [Venue 4]
Catherine Jaraszkiewicz (Elmslie), whose hard-hitting, ground-breaking poetry succeeds
in threading together the remnants of a damaged world in a unique style, though
her self confessed subject matter can often be unpleasant, neverthless stirs our
imaginations most vividly bringing our emotions to sometimes tear-brimming effect.
Catherine is a social commentator, a diarist of human failings and indiosyncrasy.
She is in full command of her fearless work and deserves to be published widely.
She is up there with Sheena Blackhall, Hugh MacDiarmid, Kathleen Jamie, George Gunn.
A memorable evening though with only six of an audience we enjoyed our wee literary
party in the intimate setting of St Katherine's, with members of Portal Community
Centre Creative Writing Group who invited some of us to read our poetry with them
and we did so warmly, with nibbles, strawberries and orange juice.
We'll have to do it again sometime.
